Good Night
October 3, 2022
Not that we in the PNW are anxious for fall, let alone winter, but let’s just say it won’t take us long to get ready for the next seasonal change. Up here that means the days get super short, super quick. There’s a reason people here drink so much coffee.
To wit: It was all the way dark outside. No traffic noise. House lights were down. Dinner was over some time ago. I heard a peppy knock on the front door (shave and a hair cut, two bits) and when I answered there stood two of the cutest young Boy Scouts ever. They were scrubbed to within an inch of their lives and had all their Boy Scout badges on display.
They were impressive. I’m used to the much scruffier versions of adolescent boys who aren’t in the Boy Scouts, so these guys stood out. They were selling the usual overpriced popcorn and cookies for their fundraiser, but I wasn’t in the position to make a transaction just then. I was in my pajamas with scary, end of the day hair, and I was basically hiding behind the door. I hated to disappoint them, but I had to send them on their way.
My oldest daughter, also in her pajamas, came out of her room to irately ask who was at the door, and didn’t they realize what time it is, and who goes around with a fundraiser at this time of night? I said, I know, right?
It was 7:30 pm.
